These beautifully crafted Ghanaian Djembe Drum are tuned to a precise pitch. We use plenty of quality rope which ensures that the drum holds its pitch for a long time before it needs tuning. Using this much rope keeps the drum sound precise and stable. The drum has a really deep bass and a sharp crisp edge slap.
These Djembe's are suitable for primary school children.
The wood, a West African Cedar called Tweneboa, is the very best quality. The drum is carved with Adinkra symbols, used in West Africa. If you look them up you can find their meanings.
These drums are fair trade and hand made in Ghana by professional African musicians. I have been working with these musicians for the last 20 years. These drums have been made to be played, for a beautiful sound.
The drums are reasonably light, lighter than hardwood drums, so are easily carried. Rope is used so the drums can be tuned to accommodate our changeable weather.
You will see many cheaper drums made in factories in the Far East.
These are the reasons for choosing a genuine African Fair Trade Drum:
• the drum body is made from African Cedar (called Tweneboa). This is a fast growing tree. All our wood is obtained under license from the forestry commission in Ghana. Using this wood is less damaging for the environment than hardwood drums
• each drum is individually hand made by an African drummer. We have been working in partnership with these musicians for 20 years and we aim to promote and strengthen ancient African musical traditions
• the skins are made from strong tough African goats skin (not weakened bleached skins found elsewhere).
• Every drum is tuned before it is sent to you. We also polish the body with sesame oil.
