This beautifully crafted 16” dundun is the largest of these drums and while traditionally played as a set of three, it also sounds great on its own. Known for their deep, powerful bass, dunduns provide focus and rhythm for groups of djembe drummers and more.
Each drum in a traditional dundun set has a different tonal range based on its size, adding depth and variety to the ensemble sound:
- Dununba - the largest drum, producing a low, bass-heavy sound.
- Sangban - mid-sized, with a moderate pitch and role in both rhythm and melody.
- Kenkeni - the smallest, creating higher tones and sharper accents.
Made with durable cowhide drum heads for added strength, the dundun comes with a stick beater, which is how they are meant to be played.
The wood, Tweneboa, is a sustainable West African Cedar of the very best quality and has been hand-carved with meaningful Adinkra symbols. Each drum has its own unique symbols, giving it a personal touch. You can explore the meanings behind Adinkra symbols through various blogs like this. Tweneboa is also a lightweight wood compared to hardwood alternatives, making the dunduns easier to carry.
Unlike factory-made versions, these genuine fair-trade drums are handmade in Ghana by professional musicians, designed to be played and loved.
Every drum is handcrafted by skilled musicians we've partnered with for over 20 years, supporting and preserving ancient Ghanaian musical traditions.
The instruments are all individually handmade, rather than mass-produced in factories.
The body is made from sustainably sourced Tweneboa, a fast-growing wood, obtained under licence from the Ghana Forestry Commission.
The extra durable cow skins are the perfect strength to accompany the stick beaters, and are unbleached, providing superior sound quality.
Every drum is carefully tuned before being sent to you.
If you're looking for a genuine drum with heart, heritage, and a beautiful sound, this is it.
