Artisan Ghanaian Mask No.7

An ornate large Fang Mask, hand carved from Tweneboa (African cedar) and finished with brilliantly coloured beadwork in an artists' community north of Accra, Ghana. The elongated form, with carved lines running from the forehead to the tip of the nose, is the classic Fang silhouette traditionally linked with initiation ceremonies.

The beadwork lifts this piece: rows of vivid colour tracing the carved features, every bead placed by hand. West African masks were worn in ceremony and dance to connect the living with the ancestors, and pieces like this keep both the carving and beading traditions working today.
