A brightly coloured, ornate mask, hand carved from Tweneboa (African cedar) and decorated with vibrant beadwork in an artists' community north of Accra, Ghana. Every bead is placed by hand, turning the carved face into a blaze of colour.

Masks occupy a special place in West African culture, traditionally mixing human and animal characteristics and worn in ceremony and dance to connect the living with the spirits of the ancestors. They remain one of the great storytelling art forms of the continent.
