If a plain djembe is a great drum, this one is a great drum in full ceremonial dress. Hand carved in Ghana from Tweneboa - African cedar - the shell is wrapped in vibrant Kente-style fabric in bold colours, framing the hand-carved decorative patterns beneath.
It is every bit a serious instrument. The 11" head carries a thick, unbleached goat skin under heavy-duty rope tuning, producing booming bass and explosive slap tones with a huge dynamic range that rewards proper djembe technique.
The wood is purchased through the Forestry Commission of Ghana from fast-growing managed stock, and every drum is made individually by skilled Ghanaian drummers - with fabric wraps that vary, no two are alike.
