The shekere is one of West Africa's essential rhythm instruments: a dried gourd wrapped in a hand-tied net of Job's tear seeds (or occasionally bright plastic beads), shaken and slapped between hand and thigh to produce a crisp, rattling 'chichichi' that locks beautifully into djembe rhythms.
These large shekeres are handmade in Ghana. Because they are built on natural gourds, sizes vary with the growing season - these are the biggest of the current batch, roughly 25-35cm long - and every single one is different in shape, tone and character.
Hold it by the neck, find the pulse, and it almost plays itself.
Fair Trade and ethically sourced from Ghanaian makers.
Specifications: approx. 25-35cm. Made in Ghana.
