Artisan Ghanaian Mask No.9

A brightly coloured Moon Mask - the distinctive round form - hand carved from African cedar and decorated with vivid beadwork in an artists' community north of Accra, Ghana.

The beading gives this piece real personality: bold bands of colour applied by hand across the carved face. In West African tradition, masks combine human and animal characteristics and were worn in ceremony and dance to link the living with their ancestors; they continue to carry the history of many African peoples today.

Like all our artisan masks, this is a one-off. One was made, and this is it.
