Ghanaian Caxixi Shaker

The caxixi is a small basket shaker with a surprisingly big vocabulary. Handwoven in Ghana from straw over a dried gourd base, it produces a crisp, sizzling rattle when shaken side to side and a harder, sharper snap when driven straight down against the gourd - two distinct sounds in one small instrument.

That versatility is why the caxixi turns up everywhere from West African music to capoeira and modern percussion rigs. It is light, colourful, practically indestructible in normal use, and small enough to live in a gig bag pocket.

Each one is handmade, so weaves and colours vary.
